Avoidance – It’s a slippery slope
Avoiding life. . . we all do it. I can honestly tell a person what my go to strategies are when things start to seem overwhelming. When the pressure gets high. When the stress builds.
Some people play video games. Others go out on the town drink their face off and sleep off the product of the night the next day. Maybe you like to sit back and watch porn. Or possibly get lost and sucked into YouTube. Next thing you know another day off has passed you by. That could mean your dog didn’t get walked. Maybe your kids just wanted to hang out. Your partner wanted to do something together but that pressure just leads right into avoiding.
Even when we have tools. . . a lot of them. We still veer off track. With less tools the path to avoidance is slippery and pretty soon its a lot like this banana slides. Next thing you know its like that fish you thought you caught that, as soon as you got the hook out, it somehow slipped right out of your hand back into the water. Things feel out of control. The mountain gets bigger.
So what can you do? We all want solutions right. One thing I know is that knowing what matters helps to get out of the muck. Is it your family? Your dog? Your job? Your colleagues? Financial freedom? Each person has a unique set of values – things that are of primary importance. When we focus in on those life gets some clarity and with that in mind small steps start to be taken toward the things that matter to you most.
